Mini Granny Square Bandana

Yarn:   Lion Brand, LB Collection Cotton Bamboo 1 skein #107 Hyacinth and 1 skein #135 persimmon                        

Materials:

US Size G/6 (4 mm) crochet hook and E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors, and measuring tape


Difficulty:

Easy


Size:

25” (63.5 cm) across the top of triangle, each tie is 10” (25.4 cm) long and each granny square is 2" (5 cm) X 2" (5 cm)


Gauge:

20 sts and 25 rows = 4”


Stitch Guide:

Ch(s) - chain(s), sc - single crochet, dc-double crochet, RS - right side,

st(s)– stitch(s), Yo – Yarn over


Special Stitches:

Picot: Ch 5, sl st in the 5th chain from hook


Notes:

Pattern is written in U.S. terms

Beginning ch-3 counts as a dc-double crochet

This bandana is done using mini granny squares and mini half or triangle granny squares


Instructions:

Mini Granny Square

(Make 21 squares with blue center and 15 squares with orange center)


With center color A make a magic circle

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3, 2 dc in the circle, ch 1,* 3 dc in the circle, ch 1; repeat from * 2 more times, join to the third chain of beginning ch-3, fasten off. (12 dc + 4 ch-1 sps)

Round 2: Join color B to any ch-1 space, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the same space, ch 1 * (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the next ch-1 space, ch 1; Repeat from * two more times, join to the third ch of beginning ch-3, fasten off, weave in ends. (24 dc + 8 ch-1 sps)


Mini Half Granny Square (Triangle)

(Make 6 half granny triangles with blue center and 6 half granny triangles with orange center and one half granny triangle in solid blue)

With color A make a magic circle

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3, 2 dc in the circle, ch 1, 3 dc in the circle, fasten off. (6 dc + 1 ch-1 sp)

Round 2: Join color B, turn, ch 3, 2 dc in the first st, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the next ch-1 space, ch 1, 3 dc in the 3rd ch of the ch-3 on previous round, fasten off, weave in ends. (12 dc + 3 ch-1 sps)

Layout:

Once you have finished making your 36 mini granny squares and 13 mini granny triangles, lay out the granny squares and triangles as follows: (see photo below) The first row does not show the mini half-granny square.

Row 1: 11 mini granny squares with the blue center and 2 blue center mini half-granny triangles

Row 2: 9 mini granny squares with the orange center and 2 orange center mini half-granny triangles

Row 3: 7 mini granny squares with the blue center and 2 blue center mini half-granny triangles

Row 4: 5 mini granny squares with the orange center and 2 orange center mini half-granny triangles

Row 5: 3 mini granny squares with the blue center and 2 blue center mini half-granny triangles

Row 6: 1 mini granny squares with the orange center and 2 orange center mini half-granny triangles

Row 7: 1 solid blue mini half-granny triangles


Join the squares and triangles together using the E/4 (3.5 mm) hook, there are a few different ways to join granny squares. This project was done with a single crochet join, with the ridge on the right side for texture.


Edging (base round)

Round 1: (RS): join yarn to the top (long side of the bandana) right corner of the bandana, sc evenly around the bandana, working 104 stitches across the top, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the corner,  58 sc down the side, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the point, 58 sc on the other side, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the top right corner where you started, join to first sc, do not end off, continue to final edging and ties. (220 sc, 3-ch-2 sps)


Final Edging and Ties

Ch 51, ss in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to the end, sc in each st across the top of the bandana, ch 51, ss in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to the end, (this will make ties and finish the top), now working on the side, sc in the next st, (sc, picot) in the next st, *sc in the next st, (sc, picot) in the next st; repeat from * to the point, (sc, picot, sc) in the ch-2 space at the point, then repeat from * across the other side, ending with a sc in the last st, join to first ch of beg ch 51, fasten off, weave in ends. (168 sc + 100 ss + 58 Picot sts)
